Last week was a busy summer week. We’ve quickly learned that people in Vermont spend as much time outdoors as possible during the summer—enjoying it while it lasts, I guess you could say. We’ve been invited by several church families to enjoy their favorite summer outdoor activities! So last week we took a day trip to Word of Life Camp, which is just over the border in New York. A group of youth from our church goes to the “Ranch” part every year, but there is also a part for families. We got to see both parts. We had to take a ferry to get there. It was just a short 7 minute trip over Lake Champlain, but we thought it was really cool and it cuts about 30 minutes off the trip if you were to drive around. (There were only about 4 or 5 cars on the ferry each trip!)
When we got there we first looked around the family campground. They have activities for the kids to do while the adults attend worship services or participate in other on-camp activities, like skiing, boating, swimming, etc. We were able to drop the kids off for an hour and go hear a speaker, which we really enjoyed. The kids had a great time, too! We ate lunch at the campsite of the family we were visiting after looking at the rest of the camp. They have so many different activities throughout the week for families, for couples, and for kids! Then we took a short trip to the Ranch part of the camp. This is a more traditional summer camp setting, where kids (grades 1-8) spend a week on their own doing typical camp activities. (They could also go just for the day and go camp with their family in the Family Campground at night, too, if they wanted.) They have a real petting zoo at the Ranch and they were generous enough to let the kids explore! Leah and Andrew both got to hold a mouse (until they got scared and dropped them!!), pet a pig, a duckling, and some sheep. They loved this! We walked around the rest of the camp, too, and loved what we saw. We definitely want to start spending some time over the summer at Word of Life. Probably next summer we will try to do the Family Campground, and eventually we’d love to send Leah and then Andrew to the Ranch—they will gain so many great experiences!
The following day we joined another church friend at the lake for some swimming, another Vermont summer favorite activity. The air was a little chilly but the water wasn’t too bad and Leah and Andrew enjoyed splashing around a little while. They loved watching the little fish in the water, too. Abigail wasn’t too interested in getting in the water, but loved sitting on shore eating her chips. It’s not the ocean, but the lake is a good substitute!
We also got a new toy from another church friend. A new sandbox! It’s the perfect size for all 3 kids to play and they love to go out in their bare feet and just dig in the sand. (Abigail’s still not too thrilled about putting her feet in it, but she’ll stand on the outside and rake or dig for a long time!) The kids love going out in our backyard already, and now they have something else exciting too!
