July 4th Fun 2014

We have done more this year for the 4th of July than we ever have before! So many people in Vermont want to make sure we’re kept busy so we don’t miss our family too much! On July 3rd, we went to a party at the home of a church member’s son who has this huge bash every year. He’s very wealthy and has a huge home and every year invites hundreds of people for his July 3rd party. Unfortunately, it was pouring down rain, so much of it had to be inside, but we still had good food, we got to meet some new people, the kids got to play with their friends, and at the end of the night we did get to see a few fireworks (not the town’s, just some small ones the neighbor set off). Leah claimed she wanted to see fireworks, but when they actually went off, she and Andrew both didn’t like them too much and preferred to watch inside. Abigail didn’t even flinch, but then I think she was pretty worn out by that point anyway!

The next day we got up early to go to a parade in Bristol, Vermont, which is supposedly the largest in the state. It wasn’t too bad—lasted about 45 minutes or so, although there was a big gap in the middle. They also had some bounce castles and roadside food stands we enjoyed. Aside from a little whining about not getting candy (there were a lot of aggressive kids right in front of us), the kids had fun.

We spent the rest of the 4th at the home of Jason & Jill with them and another family from church who have 2 older kids. We spent the entire day outside! It was a little chilly (probably low 60’s) but we had a nice fire and just enjoyed being together. Jason took Leah & Andrew on his 4-wheeler, which they both loved! Andrew sat on that thing by himself for the longest time!

They also loved the trampoline and corn hole and lots of old toy trucks Jason got out. The kids were very independent that day, not needing me to entertain them or even be near them as much as they usually require. They loved playing with Drew or just running around the yard. This independence is a trend that seems to be continuing—the next day they went out in our backyard & played on their own without me having to be out there with them. They do this at church a lot, too—they can run off and do their own thing and I feel perfectly comfortable that they’re fine.

We had a really great day and the kids were exhausted that night. Then, the next evening, we got to see our old friends Sarah and Ben and their new daughter! They were actually on a mission trip, visiting from NC. The mission trip had been planned before we even moved to Vermont, so when we found out they were only going to be 40 minutes away, we couldn’t miss the chance to see them and meet their new baby. They were pretty busy and didn’t have their own transportation so we didn’t get to see them much, but even a little was great!
