22 Months Old; 8 Months Pregnant

At 22 months, Leah seems to be learning new things all the time-- sometimes I just look at her and wonder, "since when does she know how to do that?" She's become quite a mimic, too, and we have to always watch what we say! She is growing up way too fast, and I can't believe she's almost 2!

- She still tends toward the picky side when eating, but some days she will surprise us. When it comes to things she loves (mac & cheese, rice, yogurt, strawberries), she will eat huge adult-sized portions, and ask for seconds. But many meals she'll just pick at her food, eating only what she thinks will taste good. Lately she loves bread (esp. Sarah's homemade bread), any kind of cereal, and pancakes with lots of syrup.

- She won't touch a cup of milk, but she'll ask for juice 9 or 10 times a day! She's just learning how to do a juice box, and cups with straws, and she loves to practice. Juice boxes are a great treat for her! (These pictures are from our trip to the community pool-- which she loved! They have a kiddie pool and a "spray ground" but we also spent some time in the big pool because they have kid-sized life jackets, and she really enjoyed being in the water! Swim lessons next summer, maybe?)

- Her favorite new word is "self"-- she wants to do everything by herself. She wants to brush her own teeth (which involves chowing down on the toothbrush), to wipe her own face, feed herself... you name it! "Mine" is another favorite word and she is sure to tell us when something belongs to her!
- Other funny new phrases she has picked up: "Hi, Mommy," or "Bye, Mommy." She always says "Bye, Mommy" when I lay her down in her crib for the night-- makes me laugh every time. Just recently she started saying "No, ma'am!" to things, in a disapproving tone (which is what we say to her when she is doing something she shouldn't). She also heard Brett calling me "Honey" and now goes around saying "Honey" in her sweet little voice-- very funny!

- I would like her to start getting rid of the "fussy" (her new word for the paci), but it's slow-going, mostly on my part. It's hard for me to say no when it's such an easy way to get her to calm down! She has shown only a slight interest in potty-training: I put her Elmo potty-seat on top of the big potty & she will say "potty" and ask to sit on it, but otherwise, she really doesn't tell me when she has to go (or even if she has gone). I think we'll work on this, the paci, and the toddler bed after the baby is born, because I'm expecting some regression anyway once he's here.
- We have been playing around with some new art projects & fun stuff at home, since she's not in preschool anymore and this kid loves it! Fingerpainting was a big hit, although quite messy, and Play-doh is fun, but she doesn't quite "get it" yet.

- She is a bit obsessed with Elmo (has been for awhile). She always asks for her "Elmo movie" (we have about 8 different ones, thankfully!) and will sit still to watch a 45-minute program, as long as Elmo is the star. She will kiss any picture she sees of him (including the one on her diapers) and sometimes just wanders around saying "Elmo" just for fun! I think an Elmo birthday party is in this kid's near future!

- Leah is so full of life & energy-- non-stop talking from morning till night. Yet she still has her cuddly moments and her "still" moments where she puts all her focus on an activity. She makes me laugh every day as she discovers new words and new concepts. I love to watch her dance around the living room, and I also love how she just wants to be held when she wakes up from her nap.

- It really makes Brett & I excited to see how excited she gets about our newly-started family devotion time. She loves to hear us sing from the hymnal. She can say the word "hymnal" too, by the way, and recognize one-- she will open it up & flip through the pages, "singing" her own songs-- she even adds her own "dancing" to the hymns sometimes. She knows, too that we always pray before we eat, and as soon as we sit down to dinner, she holds her hands out for us to grab so we can pray. She likes to look at the pictures in her little Bible, and always enjoys the "Jesus" book we have-- she can name Jesus, Mary, and even John. It is so excited to see her already developing a love for the Lord at such a young age!

Meanwhile, after my 35-week dr. appt. last Friday, I'm pretty convinced that Andrew is perfectly content where he is. I am not at all dilated and the uterus is still pretty high. I remain convinced he will not be quite as early as Leah was, although I would be okay if he was to come any day. Of course, his room is not nearly ready, but I have been able to get his clothes washed and hung up or put away (since we got Leah a new dresser), and his bassinet is ready & made. This next week or so I'll probably put in his car seat & finish packing bags for the hospital. Then I will feel mostly ready, even though I would love for his room to be done!

I thought I had been feeling Braxton-Hicks contractions (false labor) once a day or so, which I never really felt with Leah, but the dr. said it could also be the way the baby is laying, like he's on a nerve or something. I do get some sharp pains through my upper leg, too, so that is probably what it is. Regardless, he is still moving around a lot, esp. right when I lay down at night. I don't remember (or maybe intentionally blocked out) waking up every 45 minutes at night to go to the bathroom the 1st pregnancy, but that is happening now, and I dread 4 more weeks of that! With the temperatures being in the 90's around here the past few weeks, topped with the normal exhaustion of being 9 months pregnant (that's another thing I forgot about being pregnant, or perhaps it's worse this time since I have added a 2-year-old to the mix), I haven't felt motivated to do much of anything lately, although I do get bursts of energy here & there.

4 weeks to go!

Summer Fun

We've been having all kinds of fun and summer has only just begun! The first weekend in June, I took Leah on her first long car ride (9 hours) to visit my friend Elizabeth in Tennessee. Our other friend Mary Jo went with me (and I was so glad to have an extra pair of hands in the car!). We had such a great time together! We were roommates my last year of Seminary and haven't really been together much since then. Of course, we've added 2 1/2 kids since then...

We went to a park where they had fountains for the kids to play in-- she loved being in the water, and loved running over to where we were sitting to put water on us! We also rode a carousel while we were there. (The whole time leading up to the ride, she kept saying "horsey," but when I went to put her on, she did NOT want to sit down. I ended up holding her on my hip the whole ride like this. But she still really liked it.)

I got to see Leah interact with Elizabeth's 2 month old, Amelia. She was pretty gentle for the most part, but really jealous when Mary Jo (her new friend) or I held Amelia, and mad at the baby when she was in the bouncer seat Leah had claimed as her own. For the most part, she excitedly pointed to her, saying "baby! baby!" but more or less stayed away. She really preferred to chase the cat around the house!

Leah is staying with my friend Sarah this summer while I work, and it is turning out to be a great arrangement! Leah is constantly asking for "Sarah" and "Sam" (her dog). She has a car seat for her, so they've already done all sorts of fun things. They met some of Sarah's friends at a park, where Leah made a new boyfriend named Caleb (Brett's getting his gun all ready!). She's got a box "house" for sleeping in, she's played outside in the water, she's helped walk the dog, and all kinds of good fun!

We even climbed trees at the park...

We rode a bike for the first time...

And, oh, did we play at the beach! (Well, more like Leah was held at the beach-- she was definately not going to stand in that sand! But she played in the water!)

And we enjoyed being outside A LOT!

And we took lots more pictures too! Just look at the Shutterfly site!
